The 3 Stages of Creosote - and Why Stage 3 Is a Different Animal

What creosote actually is

When wood burns, the smoke carries unburned tars and vapors up the flue. On the cooler flue walls they condense - like breath fogging a cold window - and stick. That residue is creosote, and every wood fire deposits some.

How fast it builds depends on how you burn: smoldering fires, wet wood and restricted air all make smoke cooler and thicker, which condenses more. A hot, well-aired fire with seasoned wood deposits the least.

Stage 1: soot you can sweep

First-degree creosote is a dusty, flaky soot layer. A standard brush sweep removes it completely - this is the stage annual maintenance is designed to catch. If every chimney got swept yearly, stages two and three would barely exist.

Stage 2: crunchy tar flakes

Skip a couple of seasons and the deposits harden into shiny, crunchy flakes with real tar content. It still comes off, but it takes rotary tools rather than a simple brush pass, and it burns hot if ignited. Most of the chimneys we sweep in the Tulsa area are somewhere in stage two.

Stage 3: the glaze

Third-degree creosote is a hardened, glass-like tar coating - concentrated fuel fused to the flue wall. Brushes slide right over it. Removal takes rotary chain heads or chemical modifiers that break the glaze down over multiple treatments, and in the worst cases the honest answer is relining the flue.

Glaze is also the fuel of the serious chimney fire: it burns long and extremely hot. If your flue hasn't been looked at in years and you burn regularly, assume nothing - get a camera inspection before the next burn season and know what stage you're in.
