7 Warning Signs of a Chimney Fire (Most Homeowners Miss #4)

The quiet danger

Movie chimney fires roar like a jet engine. Real ones are usually silent - a slow burn of creosote inside the flue that cracks tiles and scorches framing without anyone in the living room noticing. Many are only discovered at the next inspection.

That matters because a chimney that has already had one fire is far more likely to let the next one reach the house. Cracked flue tiles are an open door for flame.

The 7 signs

1. Puffy or 'honeycomb' creosote in the flue - expanded like burnt marshmallow. 2. A loud crackling or rumbling from the chimney during a fire. 3. Dense smoke or sparks from the top of the stack. 4. Flakes of burnt creosote on the roof or in the yard - the one almost everyone misses. 5. Cracked or missing flue tiles, or tile shards in the firebox. 6. Warped metal components - damper, cap or smoke chamber parts. 7. Creosote-stained mortar joints visible from outside the stack.

Any one of these is reason to stop burning until the flue has been inspected with a camera. Two or more means it already happened.

If a chimney fire is happening now

Get everyone out and call 911 - even a contained flue fire can reach framing fast. If you can do it safely on the way out, close the damper or the stove's air intake to starve the fire of oxygen. Do not pour water into the flue; the thermal shock shatters tiles.

After any suspected fire, treat the chimney as unsafe until a Level 2 (camera) inspection clears it. That's not upsell talk - it's how insurance adjusters treat it too.

Making sure it never happens

Chimney fires need fuel, and the fuel is creosote. Annual sweeping removes it; burning seasoned wood slows how fast it builds; and a yearly inspection catches the early stages when removal is cheap and easy.

Our $69 inspection looks at exactly the failure points listed above, photographs everything, and credits the fee toward any work needed. It's the cheapest insurance a fireplace can have.
