Wood gives you the real fire and cheap fuel; gas gives you instant on/off and zero hauling. We'll talk through how you actually use your fireplace before recommending either.
Do inserts need chimney maintenance too?
Yes - annual inspection, and sweeping for wood units. The liner and venting still handle real exhaust.
